The rest of the game remains as usual: 28 teams can play in a season (with a choice of short, medium or long season length), establishing the then-new NHL overtime forfeit point, playoffs (with best of 1, 3, 5 or 7 games), international tournament and shootout.
This makes penalties much shorter (a foul takes only 30 seconds in a five minute period) thus reducing the powerplay percentage, which experienced players could maintain in the high 90's in previous games, but also fixes goalie handicapping in games played (a goalie who suffered a single goal would have his GAA much higher than a goalie who suffered more goals in a simulated game). One of the most important changes made to the game is the way the timer works: previously, the length of the period on the clock matched the time set by the player, but as of NHL 2000, each period has 20 minutes that are compressed into the time set by the player. Other new features include individual player and goalkeeper power-ups (to give a team a handicap), and jersey selection, including the classic throwback jerseys. Gameplay has become much faster and harder, and two new moves have been included: 'Big hit', to crush the opposing team's golden boy, and 'Special move', to get around those tough defenders with ease. To do this, you have to place a photo in a folder, import it, and then configure the hotspots (shape of the head, eyes, nose and mouth), to define how the texture will be mapped onto the face model. The two main features of the game are the new Dynasty mode, which allows a player to lead a team to success for 10 seasons in a row, keeping an eye on new talent in the annual drafts and trading with other teams, and the face import feature, which gives the possibility to assign each custom player his own face based on a photo. The millennium installment of the NHL series brought, as usual, updated rosters, featuring the Atlanta Thrashers for the first time, plus improved graphics and sound.
